Once scoliosis is suspected, most families want to know exactly what happens next. The formal diagnosis process at Dorsi Spinal Institute is designed to be thorough, reassuring, and easy to understand.
Step 1: History and Concerns
We start by listening. Our clinicians ask about:
- When changes in posture were first noticed.
- Any pain, fatigue, or breathing issues.
- Family history of scoliosis or back problems.
- Growth spurts, puberty stage, and general health.
Step 2: Physical Examination
A hands-on assessment follows, which may include:
- Observation of the spine from front, side, and back.
- The forward bend (Adams) test for rib or lumbar humps.
- Leg length, pelvic balance, and shoulder symmetry checks.
- Basic neurological tests (reflexes, strength, sensation).
Step 3: Imaging
If scoliosis is likely, we arrange appropriate imaging. This can include:
- Standing spinal x-rays to measure Cobb angles.
- 3D surface or LiDAR scans to capture external body shape and alignment.
- Referral for MRI if there are neurological symptoms or unusual findings.
Step 4: Explanation and Education
Results are explained clearly, using images on screen:
- Where the curve is and how big it is.
- How much growth is left.
- What the numbers mean for risk and treatment options.
You leave with a solid understanding of the diagnosis, not just a report full of jargon.
Step 5: Building a Plan
Depending on severity and risk, we may recommend:
- Observation and periodic check-ups.
- Custom bracing and scoliosis-specific exercises.
- Discussion with spinal surgeons in very severe or rapidly progressing cases.
Next Steps
If you’ve been told “there might be a curve,” but haven’t had a clear, structured assessment, Dorsi Spinal Institute can provide a complete, official diagnosis and roadmap for care.
