A scoliosis consultation with one of our specialist scoliosis consultants will allow you to discover the treatment options available to you or your child.
A scoliosis consultation can take place in our Nottingham Flagship clinic and rehab centre or virtually if you prefer.
The Dorsi Method combines multiple scientifically validated techniques for the management of your Scoliosis.
Over the last 20 years our clinical director Dr Matthew ABJ Potts has developed the “hybrid” Dorsi Method for the management of Scoliosis. After your initial consultation & examination your consultant will outline the best options for you or your child. This process takes 90 minutes and is usually split over two separate visits. However if you are travelling from far away, especially if you are flying to the UK for your consultation please mention this at the time of booking and we can arrange for both visits to be booked consecutively on the same day.
The Dorsi method consists of four distinct components. Each one can be used alone or in conjunction with the others. Your Scoliosis specialist will explain which therapy or combination is best for you. They range from out-patient (performed at home) exercises to custom-made 3D corrective spinal orthosis known as a brace. We follow research based protocols to decide which options are best for you and explain everything fully.
Your options will depend on many factors such as age, how much growth you have left (for children) degree of curvature, amount of imbalance in your body, your pain levels and of course.. your GOALS.
The Four treatment options are…
In smaller curvatures and mostly for adults who have less risk of the curvature progressing rapidly we utilise established Chiropractic CBP hands-on treatment protocols. In CBP the practitioner moves your spine in a very gentle and ultra-precise way to stimulate the correction of abnormal spinal curvatures and the improvement of sagittal (side on) curves that you do want to maintain or restore.
In complex cases such as scoliosis, we may also use “Mirror-Image” traction, which involves you laying on a specially shaped foam wedge called a ScoliRoll that is shaped to match your curve. It is called mirror-image because you lay on the wedge in exactly the opposite way to how your spine usually sits. At first this can feel weird, so we build you up from just a minute or two to 20 minutes which is the point of maximum traction of the spinal muscles and ligaments.

Although CBP is growing in popularity, there are still only a few experienced CBP practitioners in the UK. With with a background in rehabilitation, working with elite sports teams Dr Potts wanted an advanced stage to rebuild your spine so that it can support this new movement and positioning. Eventually, after years of research, Dr Potts trained in the Schroth Technique which was developed purely for the rehabilitation of Scoliosis and other spinal curvatures. If appropriate, we will prescribe Schroth and/or SEAS exercises either in isolation or together with your hands-on treatment/Mirror-image traction. Every case is unique and we will build a programme that is just right for you.

Our rehab team will teach you simple exercises and ways to sit, walk, stand and lay. The principles are very simple because we are looking to change your spinal patterns for as much as your day as possible. This has been proven to be so effective because it differs from other approaches that look to give you 30 minute workouts, but do not consider the other 23.5 hours in a day!

ScoliBrace Scoliosis Braces
Some children have a curvature that is at risk of getting worse. Other times the curvature is significant and heading to the point that the hospital may consider offering you surgery. In this instance, hands on treatment or exercises are just not enough! We use internationally recognised guidelines when prescribing a specially designed brace to stop the curve progressing. This usually applies to curves over 25 degrees or in young children where their curve has a very high chance of getting worse.
Braces can also be suitable for older patients where pain and the risk of degeneration warrants extra support.
We use the Scolibrace, for more information CLICK HERE. The Scolibrace uses the latest evidence based principles to not only stop your curvature progressing but has been shown to improve curvatures in many cases.
The NHS may also prescribe a brace, but the standard approach is to monitor you until the curve is too large and surgery is needed, this is known as “watch and wait”. In the cases where they do offer a brace it is usually a type of brace called a BOSTON BRACE, that acts as a corset to stop the progression of the curve until your child stops growing. This symmetrical brace does nothing to IMPROVE the curvature; the only way we can achieve this is by using a custom designed “over-corrective 3D Brace”
We feel the ScoliBrace is the best 3D designed brace available.
The ScoliBrace is designed with the mirror-image principles that we spoke about earlier and developed by an experienced CBP practitioner. The ScoliBrace looks to hold your spine in the opposite pattern to the curvature in your spine, or that of your child. There are special spaces built into the brace to allow you to breath which makes it comfortable but also makes your spinal muscles work harder in the opposite pattern to your curvature. This way it is almost like you are doing exercises for your spine with every breath & minimises muscle wastage that my happen with other ‘symmetrical’ braces such as those offered by the NHS.
Our practice uses state of the art sEMG muscle scanning equipment to monitor changes to your muscles and make sure that your body is adapting to the brace and starting to work against your curvature. We have also invested in the UK’s first LiDar (light Radar) spine scanner to minimise the use of radiation where possible.
In summary, the Dorsi Spinal Institute offers a full spectrum approach including the initial consultation & examination, x-ray plus where appropriate; hands-on treatment, specific exercises and ScoliBrace 3D designed braces. No other practice in the country can offer this full spectrum approach to the management of scoliosis.

A brace is not something we would prescribe lightly; it does involve a big commitment from the wearer and is not available on the NHS so has a cost implication. We use a special formula that is based on the most up to date scientific literature to work out whether a brace is really necessary. This also helps us to decide how long the brace needs to be worn each day and at what point you could stop wearing or wean off using your brace*
*please note that weaning only applies to children, adults will need to wear their brace long term to prevent worsening of their curvature, reduce the risk of degeneration and reduce pain levels and disability associated with their curvature.
Adolescent Braces are £3495 including all follow up assessments and x-rays.
Adult Braces start at £495 for semi-bespoke braces up to £3495 for a fully customised 3D brace.
